Harper's Bazaar Great Style: Best Ways to Update Your Look-Jenny Levin

One of the best style books ever!, November 29, 2007

By Marcy Gomez (Kansas City, USA) - See all my reviews

This is one of the best style/fashion books currently in publication and - trust me - I have looked. I am a big fan of Harper's Bazaar magazine, with its glossy spreads and entertaining, clever articles so this book was on my 'must have' list as soon as I discovered its pending publication in Amazon.

This book doesn't disappoint. Fans of magazines like In Style and People Stylewatch will love how this book blends a traditional style guide with the world of fashion and entertainment. Case in point, the Table of Contents covers the following:

Brenda Kinsel's Fashion Makeover: 30 Days to Diva Style!

"Brenda Kinsel helped me to dress and look my best, to be the person I am instead of imitating the unattainable models one sees in women s magazines. For the first time in my life, I like the way I dress." Isabel Allende, author of "In s of My Soul" and "The House of Spirits"

The Triumph of Individual Style : A Guide to Dressing Your Body, Your Beauty, Your Self- Carla Mason Mathis, Helen Villa Connor

This text aims to teach the reader how to assess her body type and then choose clothing

with her innate creativity is what authors call style.

Bitter is the New Black : Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass,Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office- Jen Lancaster

From Publishers Weekly
It doesn't take Lancaster long to live up to her lengthy subtitle ("Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smart-Ass, or Why You Should Never Carry a Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office"): in just one chapter, she gloats over cheating a homeless man, is rude to a waitress and passes judgment on all of her co-workers (including her "whore" best friend). She's almost gleeful about lacking "the internal firewall that keeps us from saying almost everything we think," but she doesn't come off as straightforward, just malicious. (Of course, it's possible she's making up much of her dialogue, which is a little too clever to be believable.) Lancaster expects sympathy for her downward slide after getting fired from her high-paying finance job in the post-9/11 recession, and chick lit fans may be entertained watching life imitate fiction, but just when you start to feel sorry for her, the snotty attitude returns. In later chapters, Lancaster increasingly relies on entries from her blog ( www.jennsylvania.com ) and caustic replies to criticisms, and though things start looking up—her husband finds a job, she lands a book deal—it's not clear that she's been as chastised by her experiences as she claims. By xoxonikki "not ur granny's reviews" (1313 mockingbird lane) - See all my reviews

I love this book, it's loaded with gorgeous pictures of bags that are VERY stylish. It gives you patterns, covers basics of sewing, and is even great for expert Clothing Designers and Seamstresses like me. The book is by teachers at NYC's Fashion Institute and there's a section of very creative and fashionable creations by chosen accessory design students. The patterns are all there and somewhat easy to figure out. Most of all I love the pictures. I'm talking these are REAL designer bags like something you'd find at Betsy Johnson. These aren't your grannies sewing projects! There isn't a single quilting fabric found in this book. They even tell you how to make leather bags. And in the back, you can contact each student that made the designer's gallery bags (to tell them how much you love them, ofcourse! Hope you have as much fun with this one as I did.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Being a Model-Roshumba Williams

This model wannabe is an idiot no more thanks to Roshumba!, November 9, 1999
By A Customer

My review of the Complete Idiot's Guide to Being a Model has to be prefaced. I, like everyone else, have always been fascinated with the world of modeling. When I was a kid, I told my mom that I wanted to take modeling lessons so that I could "stop slouching" and carry myslf better (things that she usually admonished me about). In reality, I just wanted to learn how to strut down the catwalk like Christie Brinkly and Nikki Taylor. As I started to learn more about the moves, I got curious about what it would really be like to be a model. Unfortunately, I never found out, but I always wondered. Then, I saw Roshumba's book at Barnes and Nobles.

Bruce Weber

No review really needed, November 18, 2005
By mkb (new york, new york USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Bruce Weber (Hardcover)
Following Bruce Weber's seminal first two books (untitled 1st book) and O Rio, this 3rd monograph perhaps lacked the more coherent thematic structure of it's predecessors. However by the mid 80's Bruce Weber had become so prolific and successful that a few books followed that captured some of his diversity, sublime eye and effortless style. The sheeer beauty and quality of Bruce Weber's work spoke for itself (as in all his books). To quibble with stars is absurd and misses the point.

Blood Sweat and Tears - Bruce Weber

Blood Sweat and Tears is a stunning coffee-table tome of Bruce Weber’s most brilliant observations of fashion. -- Gotham Magazine, January 2006

People in Vogue: A Century of Portraits - Robin Derrick, Robin Muir

From Publishers Weekly
This rich volume could well serve as a photographic history of well-heeled British culture during the 20th century, and there's an interesting story behind almost every shot. Edited by Derrick, British Vogue's creative director, and Muir, the magazine's former picture editor, the assemblage includes 350 b&w and color photographs, some previously published and many that never made it into the magazine's pages. A century's worth of artists, actors, politicians, models, royalty and singers-not all of them British-are represented, including blue-blooded novelist Nancy Mitford, a playful Sophia Loren and Queen Elizabeth as a young princess in uniform during World War II.

Thing of Beauty - Stephen Fried

Trashy celebrity bios are usually diminished by the fact that we've already heard the stories about Lonnie and Burt, or Madonna and Sean, or whoever the current target is. Author Stephen Fried manages to get all the sleaze value plus a lot of surprises by choosing supermodel Gia Carangi as his topic. Although her face is widely recognized, Gia finished her modeling career in a blaze of heroin and disease just before the time when models became celebrities with name recognition.

Everyone's Favorite Photo Book - Artful Nudes, December 23, 1999
By A Customer

I have over 50 photo books in my collection, but this one gets the most attention. Everyone seems to linger over the many beautiful images in this book, even after quickly flipping through other photo books by great masters. Howard Schatz has taken some beautiful vibrantly colored (and some black and white) artistic photos underwater, even though most other photographers get ugly photos with a horrible blue cast when they take underwater shots. The monumental effort necessary to create these great images is documented in this book and is well worth the read too.
By the way, it is interesting to note that some people I know who are offended even by what many would consider artistic nudes are surprisingly not offended by the nudes in this book. So, if you tend to be offended by artistic nudes, perhaps you may find this book opens your eyes to the beauty of the nude as an art form. I suspect with this book that Howard Schatz may have made a significant contribution to the acceptance of nudes by the general public.

From Publishers Weekly
Cofounder of the upstate New York Omega Institute and author of The Seeker’s Guide, Lesser uses her own life story, and those of others, to explore what she calls the "Phoenix Process," or positive life change that can emerge from very difficult life events. In short, episodic chapters, Lesser cites stories of those who have gone through a divorce (as she has), lost a child or suffered a terminal illness. She brings in thinkers such as Tibetan Buddhist Pema Chodron, the late philosopher Joseph Campbell and her longtime friend and colleague Ram Dass to illustrate how meditation and belief in a spirit that works through people can help break through fear and hopelessness.

Portrait Photographer's Handbook- Bill Hurter

Get Monte Zucker's Handbook or the 2nd Edition - the 3rd Is a Mess, March 5, 2008
By Maine Character (Westport Island, ME) - See all my reviews

I waited a few months for the 3rd edition to come out, and now wish I hadn't, due to how it tries to put three books - an introduction to digital photography, a portrait handbook, and a book on Photoshop techniques - into 120 pages. Each of those subjects is far too in-depth to cover well in one book and, even as it is, it's poorly done.

Chap. 1 - Equipment and Basic Techniques
A good intro to lenses, depth of field, meters, umbrellas, etc.

Chap 2 - Good Digital Working Techniques
Here's where it starts to go off track, basically giving you a beginner's manual on digital photography, including info on formatting your cards and backing up your images.

1000 Objects: Extra-Ordinary Everyday Things English (German Edition)

Dirt cupcake mix, as American as apple pie. Nipple lightener from Japan. Tick juice, indispensable in Venezuela for black magic love rituals. Sunglasses from Zimbabwe with shades cut from plastic juice bottles and no lenses. Korean disposable straw sandals made especially for mourners and corpses. Is this stuff cool or what? But wait--there's more. Flip through this book in search of international weirdness, and it's a pretty sure bet you'll wind up absorbing some sobering information about sex, death, destruction, poverty, and the arrogant ways of multinationals. Under the guise of an ultrahip consumer's guide to the world's nifty stuff--divided into sections labeled "Food," "Fashion," "Animals," "Body," "Soul" and "Leisure"--1000 Extra/Ordinary Objects is a subversive crusader for human rights and ecological awareness.

30 Days of Fashion (A Collector's Portfolio by Mario Sorrenti)

Mario Sorrenti is making me a cappuccino. He has one of those push-button espresso makers that is supposed to ensure the perfect cup of coffee every time, but this machine’s a bit moody, he says, so he’s unsure of the outcome. That’s fine with him. Although he strives for a certain orchestrated control in his photography, he appreciates the element of chance whenever he creates. Right now his studio is uncharacteristically quiet. An assistant is repainting the well-scuffed shoot area industrial white, another comes in to discuss logistics for a location shoot that evening. Up on the wall of his studio are images for a planned exhibition in Beijing that is coinciding with the Olympics. “I am truly excited about the show, but they are censoring me like crazy,” he says. “So I am having difficulty believing it’s going to happen.” I notice a group of provocative but compellingly fashion shots put to the side. “I mean, do they know me? Have they seen my work?”

One of today’s most creatively charged, sought after and inspired fashion photographers, Mario Sorrenti signed his first contract with Harper’s BAZAAR at the maverick age of 21. His debut shoot for the magazine was with Kate Moss, his girlfriend at the time and someone he had been photographing just for himself (they met when they were both modeling). In fact, prior to his meeting at BAZAAR most of his work was purely personal, he says. The “Kate” shoot led to a two-career-making campaign for Calvin Klein. “Who will ever forget a naked Kate languidly lying on the sofa in that Obsession ad?” said BAZAAR’s Glenda Bailey years later in her April 2006 editor’s letter to an issue whose fashion well was shot entirely by Sorrenti.

Since his auspicious start, Sorrenti’s photographs have not only graced the pages of today’s leading fashion magazines and heightened the impact of more than a few memorable advertising campaigns, but they have also been exhibited as works of art in respected museums and galleries around the world. His photographs are uncompromising, inspired and often surprisingly personal despite their stated purpose as fashion illustration.

We sat down over cappuccinos (they turned out to be unsurprisingly well crafted) to discuss his photography, his inspirations and the impatience that keeps him from becoming a painter.

Workwear: Work Fashion Seduction - Oliviero Toscani

Fotograaf van vele Benneton reclames.
Functionally Fashionable: Oliviero Toscani
A newly opened exhibition at Florence’s Stazione Leopolda explores the connection between workwear and fashion design.
Text by Anna Battista | Published 14 January 2009
Visitors stepping into Florence’s Stazione Leopolda to see the exhibition “Workwear - Lavoro Moda Seduzione” (Workwear – Work Fashion Seduction) will be welcomed by a strange universe made of loud metallic noises, images and videos, bright colours and experimental materials that, superficially, don’t seem to have any connection with the world of fashion. How could it be possible to trace any kind of relationship between fireproof suits in multi-layered fibres, hardhats, welders’ masks or shoes with reinforced soles and amazing creations by contemporary designers?

COLORS Cacas: A Coffee-Table Book - Oliviero Toscani

Het poepboek

"COLORS CACAS is the world's first encyclopaedia of s***. A spin-off project from Oliviero Toscani's often-brilliant COLORS Magazine, this hundred-page tome of turds documents excement from every animal. Double page spreads on llamas' black bubbly droppings are followed by wholesome images of Tibetan bear deposits, the rich lumps dumped by lions and, yes, even samples from homosapiens. As ever with Toscani's work, it's the message behind the initial shock that lingers in the mind. Informative text highlights that half the world's human population doesn't have access to adequate sanitation, and notes that corrosive pigeon droppings have the same devastating effect on ancient buildings as acid rain. It's time to think about the stink." -- I-D Magazine, Jan-Feb, 1999

Sirens - Marco Glaviano

Remember the Sirens, those nymphs who lured mariners to their deaths with sweet, irresistible singing? Marco Glaviano's nymphs lure not with song, but with sunlight on glistening (scantily clad) flesh, and poses that flaunt the female form in all its glory. The fashion photographer, perhaps best known for his Cindy Crawford and Paulina Porizkova swimsuit calendars, has assembled a medley of photographs spanning his 25-year career, many never before published. The gorgeous gala is highlighted with Glaviano's recollections.

Lanvin - Dean L. Merceron

Alber Elbaz's most recent collection for Lanvin was an inspired study in romance, fluidity, and, maybe most importantly, winning the hearts (and checkbooks) of every buyer and editor in town. His flowing gowns and intricately embroidered dresses were also celebrated for their ability to reference the house's history while still moving very much forward. A new book by Dean L. Merceron, out next week, traces the ever-progressive history of Lanvin, from its founding in 1909 by Jeanne Lanvin up to the current reign of Elbaz, with a focus on the key collections from the first half of the twentieth century. The book is overflowing with images of gowns culled from the atelier's archive, collectors, and museums, giving a visual history to one of the most influential labels in French fashion, then and now. Harold Koda, chief curator of the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute, puts it best in his introduction: "Masterful old techniques come to life with contemporary relevance...the original spirit of Lanvin has been transposed to the present." -- Elle.com 10.2007

Poiret (Metropolitan Museum of Art Publications) - Harold Koda

Product Description

In the annals of fashion history, French couturier Paul Poiret (1879–1944) is known for liberating women from corsets and introducing pantaloons into their wardrobes. However, it is Poiret’s remarkable innovations in the cut and construction of clothing, made all the more remarkable by the fact that he could not sew, that secures his legacy.

Balenciaga and His Legacy: Haute Couture from the Texas Fashion Collection

From Booklist
How to connect a famous Spanish-French couturier with exhibits at the University of North Texas? Via Dallas-based department store founder Stanley Marcus and family and a prominent local socialite who spearheaded, first, a multipronged collection. Curator Myra Walker narrates, through interviews with Balenciaga descendants, students such as Hubert de Givenchy, and donor biographies, the life and times of an artist who shunned the concept of ready-to-wear clothing for women.

Balenciaga - Lesley Ellis Miller

Product Description
“Balenciaga is fashion’s Picasso.”—Cecil Beaton

More than three decades after his death, the Spanish couturier Cristobal Balenciaga (1895–1972) has become a legendary figure in the history of 20th-century fashion. His name is now synonymous with clothes made to the highest standards and characterized by their sculptural quality, deft manipulation of textiles, and dramatic use of color. This absorbing new book, with breathtaking illustrations, examines Balenciaga’s design and business and places him firmly in the context of the time and country in which he learned his trade—and the international fashion scene in which he subsequently matured and triumphed.

This stunning book is published to accompany The Golden Age of Couture, a major exhibition opening at the V&A in September 2007.

Blahnik by Boman: Shoes, Photographs, Conversation

Product Description
Long before their supporting role in Sex and the City, Manolo Blahnik's shoes were legendary—exquisitely detailed, unabashedly luxurious, and impossibly sexy. The epitome of sophistication and taste, they have graced the feet of royalty, supermodels, and movie stars. In these breathtaking pictures by Blahnik's longtime friend, photographer Eric Boman, the shoes take center stage in a dazzling array of intriguing and often lighthearted scenes and settings. A white leather stiletto plays an incriminating role in a suggested crime worthy of Hitchcock. A pale green mule nestles among ferns in homage to Blahnik's recurring botanical themes.

Manolo Blahnik - Colin McDowell

The Spanish designer Manolo Blahnik creates the most sought-after shoes in the world. On a supermodel, a Manolo Blahnik shoe completes the perfect ensemble; placed on a pedestal, it becomes a minor art object. Colin McDowell's Manolo Blahnik attempts to capture the genuine excitement generated by Blahnik's creations. It is only partly successful. The breathy writing style never rises above fashion-magazine gossip, though the shoes themselves extend beyond fashion into art and sculpture--even metaphysical meaning. The maestro never puts a foot wrong. The finest materials, gorgeous color, and a sense of the theatrical combine in elegant originals that consistently surprise. We are told that, besides their whimsicality and sexiness, his shoes are extremely comfortable and well made.

Gucci by Gucci - Sarah Mower

From Publishers Weekly
From paparazzi photographs to full page spreads in Vogue, this aptly lavish pictorial history chronicles Gucci's evolution since its 1921 inception in Florence, Italy. The range of shots and locations tells the story of Gucci's ubiquitous place in popular culture, without the aid of captions or credits (both relegated to the end of the book). Aside from a lengthy introduction recapping Gucci history, the collection allows the images to speak for themselves. The mix of old and new Hollywood celebrities shows Gucci spanning time, from Audrey Hepburn, Liza Minelli and Clark Gable to Brad Pitt, Sarah Jessica Parker and Madonna. Taking out the distraction of celebrity, the vibrant Gucci ad campaigns focus on the decadence of the many shoes, handbags and jewelry lines.

Tom Ford

From Publishers Weekly
This enormous compendium may be Ford's swan song as a designer, as he recently announced that he was quitting fashion to direct movies. But for the last 10 years, as the creative director at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, he took the brands in fresh directions. This huge, slipcased Festschrift checks in at 11"×14", and covers each of the Gucci years individually, compiling product shots, ads, runway candids, snippets of Ford wisdom ("I think you have to have personality at a brand—otherwise, it's just clothes"), Gucci-sporting celebrities and commercial stills.

Shoes: A Celebration of Pumps, Sandals, Slippers & More

From School Library Journal
YA. Bette Midler once said, "Give a girl the correct footwear and she can conquer the world." This book looks at what the "correct" footwear was, is, and has been. The chapters are divided into different types of shoes, e.g., sandals, pumps, boots, etc., and detail the careers of famous shoe designers. Full-color pictures showcase shoes from antiquity to the present day throughout the world. Quotes about shoes from celebrities, ordinary people, designers, and historical figures pepper the text. The book is full of quips, historical oddities, and facts that will inform and amuse researchers and browsers alike. Debbie Hyman, R. E. Lee High School, Springfield, VA

Shoes: A History From Sandals to Sneakers

'At last a work that deals not only with the history of footwear, but also with its cultural significance. This volume helps transform the shoe from a mundane object of everyday use into something of great social and psychological power.' Manolo Blahnik 'If you have ever wondered why women are forever in search of, consumed by, in love with, transformed by "The Perfect Shoe": wonder no longer. Simply read this history of shoes. Then go out and buy some more. ' Stuart Weitzman 'A landmark contribution to the study of the 'world of clothes'...an examplar in showing what is possible, what can be done and how to go about doing it...By our shoes are we known, read and put into social identity boxes.' Cultural Sociology '... moves the shoe definitively from the margins of 'accessory' to the centre of fashion. This survey of the shoe in all its aspects - historical, cultural and global - reveals footwear as a key to the vicissitudes of fashion and iconic in itself.' Elizabeth Wilson 'A landmark publication and immensely timely for the history of dress. It provides not only a wealth of important new information about the public and private meanings of shoes but also a sharp critique of these previously neglected articles of wear.'

Shoes - Lucy Pratt

From Library Journal
The authors, curators in the Department of Textiles and Dress in London's Victoria & Albert Museum, have compiled a glorious array of color photographs and period illustrations of rare bags and shoes from the museum. An informed and fascinating account of the development of shoes and purses since the Middle Ages results. Bags traces the development of this accessory from 14th-century girdle bags to 20th-century purses exhibiting the creative use of leather or manufactured materials. Shoes track decorative shoes, with varying heel heights, from medieval flats to modern lucite heels. Both books discuss men's and women's accessories but picture more of the latter, since more examples have survived.

Heavenly Soles: Extraordinary 20th Century Shoes

Product Description
Shoes might seem like mundane necessities, but over the years they have often been the subject of extravagant, quirky and fanciful design. Perhaps because feet and footwear have held such an important position in so many cultures, "Heavenly Soles" reveals the changing position of women in the 20th century - the first era in which it has been fashionable for them to walk, freely and comfortably, and in which shoes have been designed for fit and balance.

Manolo Blahnik Drawings

From Publishers Weekly
My shoes are not fashion, they are gestures. So says Blahnik in a book that lays out his designs as brightly colored whimsies, sketches deftly convey the essences of his creations. Drawings show shoes alone or with a hint of foot and leg, and yet there is so much energy and color in the 134 illustrations (125 in color) that they seem to wink and pirouette off the page. As designs, the shoes are salacious cartoons of themselves, curvy and heeled, bejeweled and shimmery. Celeb quotes, interspersed throughout, heighten the spiraling sense of posturing and play. Madonna says, they are as good as sex... and they last longer. You just put on your Manolos and you automatically find yourself saying ‰Hi sailor' to every man that walks by, says Joan Rivers.

New Shoes: Contemporary Footwear Design- Sue Huey, Rebecca Proctor

Shoes: The Complete Sourcebook - John Peacock

From Publishers Weekly
Shoe lovers will salivate over this comprehensive pictorial guide to fabulous footwear through the ages. Peacock, a former costume designer for BBC Television in London, illustrates every possible shoe imaginable, starting with an array of skimpy sandals from Ancient Egypt and moving chronologically up to a French high-top sneaker from 2003. The book is almost entirely visual, including over 2,000 colorful drawings of men's and women's boots, slippers and heels. With only brief descriptions of each shoe's materials and design, readers will probably be left wanting a more in-depth history about the development of footwear through the centuries. Who designed that red, white and blue French mule in 1789, for example? And what led to the creation of the first Assyrian boot from 3,000 years ago, which is so strikingly similar to present day Uggs?

The stiletto is phallic but supremely female, it makes the wearer at once vulnerable and in control. Six decades have seen the stiletto in vogue around the world with an ever-changing, kaleidoscopic clientele of classic ladies, Hollywood stars, fetishists, punks, princesses, power- dressers, cross-dressers, A-list celebrities, and the girl next door. For the first time, Stiletto attempts to uncover the compelling lure of the needle heel.

Vanity Fair: The Portraits: A Century of Iconic Images - Graydon Carter, David Friend

From Publishers Weekly
Vanity Fair magazine has a reputation as one of the preeminent showcases for portraits in the world, and this book gathers together a good chunk of them in all their glossy, artificial splendor. There's almost as much celebrity behind the lens as in front of it: Edward Steichen, Herb Ritts, Mario Testino, David LaChapelle and, of course, Annie Leibovitz are all included, and the portraits themselves amount to a who's who of culture and politics, with the quality of the images justifying the inclusion of the occasional lesser-known figures.
